I had a light bulb watching Andy Lau’s “Return of The Condor Heroes”
1983 Version, is still my favorite version.
I love this song soo much I had to translate the lyrics since I couldn’t find one.
I’m really sad because my interpretation of the song…does not even capture half of it’s beauty.
The first couple lines, I was able to see it in Hmoob so I did write it in Hmoob lmao. But the rest was hard.Its so poetic and deep, that I need help!!! So if you know or have an understanding of it, let me know!

If you have not already seen a version of “Return of The Condor Heroes”, Then I’d suggest watching this version OR the Louis Koo version with Carmen Lee. This is the drama that shot Andy Lau to stardom and a classic for every wushu/wuxia fan of Louis Cha, the renowned martial art novelist.
Andy Lau was just an 18 year odl or so kid and so was teh girl who played his love interest “Dragon maiden”.
Story:
Andy Lau plays Yeung Gor an orphan, left behind by his dead parents in the martial art world. His father’s sworn brother takes him in only to send him away because the family found Yeung Gor to be a trouble maker. He is sent to a taoist Monestry to learn discipline and martial art but turns out the taoists are jerks and bullies the kid in every way possible. So Yeung Gor runs away and meets Granny Suen who lives in the ancient tomb with the dragon maiden. Granny saves Yeung Gor from being killed by the jerk taoists but she dies so as a last request, the Dragon maiden takes him in and raises him. Yeung Gor refers to her as “AUNT” or “GUGU” and she for some remarkable impossible reason stays young during all the years with him growing up (this may be due to the supreme artistry she has learned and her promise to remain pure/chastity meaning to remain a virgin).
Years go by and Yeung Gor grows up, though he is still very immature and energetic as a teenager (which he really was at the time, about 18 ish years old?), all these mishap happens in the martial art world, forcing them both to leave the ancient tomb (which is not allowed, yes dragon maiden lived there her whole life, she is oblivious to the world’s cruelty!!!). They both start to realize their true feelings for one another, and soon professes but being that during this time period, the idea of a “shifu” or “master/teacher” falling in love with her/his student/diciple is STRICTLY forbidden and labeled as: adultery, breaking morals, embarrassment, looked down upon etc.
At first, yeung Gor finds the human world entertaining and filled with much more to offer but as time goes on he realizes how alone he is without Dragon Maiden and even his uncle’s family fails to love him with open arms. He vows to go back and live with Dragon maiden but along the way back learns martial art from various supreme heroes and eventually becomes the best martial artist without revealing that he is.
The world of course is cruel and pulls the lovers apart. All these beauties fall for the handsome but witty yeung Gor (one in desperate impulse from his rejection, cuts off his arm and nearly kills him), where EVIL men seek to have Dragon Maiden as theirs due to her unparalleled beauty. Yeung Gor’s plan fto get revenge for his father fails. These situations bring the lovers apart but not for forever, after long years of seperation they are reunited only to find that their time together is being cut short. Yeung Gor is poisoned with the “Love Flower”, the more he feels love the faster and bitter the pain is. The only man with the antidote wants to marry Dragon Maiden & Yeung Gor rather die than see her married to another man. So they leave the martial art world seeking peace back in the ancient tomb but all hope is destroyed, “heroes” of the martial art world continue to wreck hell everywhere even there.
Stinking taoists annoy me here, it is revealed that the man who took advantage of Dragon Maiden and stole her chastity was not our heroe Yeung Gor but the jerk Taoist and his crazy infactuation with her beauty. She is deeply sadden by this and decides to leave Yeung Gor despite his proposal for marriage, mainly because she feels she does not deserve him since she is no longer PURE. Even knowing this, Yeung Gor destroys the Taoist Monestry and before he did, he married her there against their laws (this really pissed them off). After desperate attempts to find him a cure, Dragon Maiden is advised that the best cure is for him to purge himself of all love feelings, this coming form society and all of his so called “family” members. Dragon Maiden leaves yeung Gor for the longest time, a grand total of about 24 years? (HOLY COW!!!! RIGHT!??)
16 years go by, they’re suppose to meet but she doesn’t show up, another 8 years and no words. Yeung Gor vows never to marry anyone else nor love another, leaving all beauties hopeless. 24 years, the 18 year old Yeung Gor have become matured and appearance wise still pretty damn good looking BUT he has now WHITE HAIR! He stayed silent from the turbulent martial art world, keeping a downn low profile and only focusing on finding his wife. Not giving up on Dragon Maiden, he ventures to find her and when he does, his dear wife, Dragon maiden is still young and beautiful where as he is no longer. FINALLY REUNITE!!!!!!!
Gawd, you can feel all their longing emotions pour out. The softest sincerity in his eyes and the deepest sadness in hers. Even though she left him and had him waiting 24 years, he wasn’t mad. There was no time to be mad at each other. Instead they shared bliss for the short time before trouble came lurking. She was still herself, always wearing a white outfit, beautifully suited for a beautiful women. Yeung Gor couldn’t be any more perfect as playedby Andy lau. I loved watching their every moment for it was so captivating.
The couple had so much chemistry! They were actually chosen to play these roles due to their looks but turned out they both proved to be great actor/actress. And the OST was just amazing, perfect for the drama, esp the opening and the couple’s song, wow very soothing. The martial art displayed was cheesy but still impressive for the 80’s time period.
Anyway, I am not doen with the drama yet so I will update later =)
